difference between standard operating procedure and method of procedure

SOP is a document that provides instructions to staff on how specific activities are undertaken. It functions as a guide, instructing a worker how to carry out the tasks with the least risk of error. SOP s often identify precautionary measures that can be taken to avoid risk or damage . An SOP may also outline what to do in an emergency.

Standard operating procedures are also called Sops. Each sop has suggested precautions that should be taken for safety purposes . It is important to note that sops are very specific to individual departments and may vary from one department to another. For example, according to sop guidelines in the pharmacy department, all drugs dispensed will have corresponding sop requirements , while this may not necessarily hold true for other departments that do not handle products with medical conditions. Therefore, it is vital that staff follow their own department’s guideline whenever handling products that are relevant to their area of practice.

Staff should be familiar with the Sops that apply to their department and must follow them at all times. Failure to comply results in risk to staff as well as to patients.

Sops for dispensings (drug handling precautions): 

– Apply sops when preparing drugs with hazardous chemical properties 

– Comply with sops when storing and administering hazardous chemicals 

– Transport hazardous wastes through the hospital in an approved container 

– Verify that waste containers are properly labeled before transporting them outside the premises 

– Inform recipients of drugs and other substances about any precautionary measures that may be required (e.g. heating, cooling etc.) 

– Clean and disinfect used in administration of hazardous chemicals 

– Wash exposed after use of sops 

– Dispose of contaminants, materials, and supplies in accordance with local requirements. 

Mops for dispensing medications: 

– Measure or weigh accurately the amount of medication required from powder or liquid preparations for a single dose. 

– Use aseptic techniques when handling powdered medications to avoid contamination. 

– Administer drugs through a dedicated intravenous line that is disconnected immediately after use.

Some difference between standard operating procedure and method of procedure are :

  1. sop (Standard Operating Procedure) and mop (Method of Procedure) OR sop vs mop: sop is a procedure which is defined under the supervisory responsibility to perform a particular task, sops are written in order to do a particular task. There may be the same sops for different locations like sop for roll change sop etc.
  2. sop is more of a very specific type while mop can be compared with sops.
  3. sop’s are define under the authority of management while mop’s are defined by experts in their field of work, sop’s have to undergo training before performing their task but mop’s do not usually require that unless it depends on equipment or circumstances like sops may include instructions like wear gloves when working with chemicals etc if there is any requirement of such things sop has to be amended accordingly.
  4. sop include detailed things like what material required, how much time required who has to perform which particular job etc while mops include how it needs to be done like sops state “put on safety glasses” while mops state ” wear safety glasses” sops are not ambiguous than mops.
  5. sop’s are reviewed by management s sop’s need to be approved before they can actually start working which is not so in case of mop’s sop’s also include who has to review them and how often they have to be reviewed if there is any negligence or mistakes sop has to be clearly defined so that it doesn’t happen again sops are very specific and whenever any discrepancy occurs the person responsible for such sop errors his/her name gets registered in sops manual and they may get penalized according to the severity of their mistake.
